MAUREEN L. CROPPER, formerly a Lead Economist in the Sustainable Rural and Urban Development team of the World Bank's Development Research group, is currently a consultant working jointly in the East Asia Environment Sector, Africa Transport, and the Development Research Group. She is also a Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland. She received her B.A. degree from Bryn Mawr College (1969) and her Ph.D. from Cornell University (1973). She is past president of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists and has served on the USEPA’s Science Advisory Board since 1994.
Her research has focused on valuing environmental amenities (especially environmental health effects), on the discounting of future health benefits, and on the tradeoffs implicit in environmental regulations. Her recent research focuses on factors affecting deforestation in developing countries and on the externalities associated with motorization.
